Royal Enfield Prepares for Increased Motorcycle Production

Royal Enfield prepares for its next level of global growth: Commercial motorcycle production from the Oragadam manufacturing facility begins

Chennai, April 30, 2013:

Royal Enfield today started commercial production from its new manufacturing facility at Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. Spread over 50 acres, the Oragadam plant starts with an installed production capacity of 150,000 units in the first phase. An initial investment of Rs 150 crores has been made towards construction of this facility that will produce the full range of Royal Enfield motorcycles.

Siddhartha Lal

Rolling out the first motorcycle from the Oragadam facility, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO, Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “At Royal Enfield we have recorded a major milestone today with this plant at Oragadam becoming operational. Royal Enfield has witnessed a huge surge in demand in the recent past, recording a growth of over 50 percent for each of the last two years. We have been extremely successful in stretching the capacity of our existing 60 year old plant to record levels – achieving production of over 12,000 motorcycles in the month of March 2013. Yet the demand for our motorcycles has continued to outpace the supply. Therefore we have conceived of this new facility on a much larger tract of land and created a master-plan that can take the eventual production here to over 500,000 per year. With the speedy execution of the first phase of the plan, we have revised our production target upwards in 2013 – to 175,000 motorcycles from both plants. However, even as we start commercial production today, we have already begun working on the second phase of expansion at Oragadam, which will further increase the production capacity to 250,000 motorcycles in 2014. With this new facility, we now have the ability to scale our production quantity quickly in response to market demand.

“This new plant has been benchmarked to achieve the highest level of quality and productivity. We have re-tooled many of the parts that make up our motorcycles – so that they are of exacting accuracy and finish. The substrate quality of the sheet metal parts, for example, is now at par with the best in the world; when these parts undergo the world-leading CED and paint process here at Oragadam – they will have a surface finish and life of the highest quality,” he further added.

Talking about Royal Enfield’s future plans Mr Siddhartha Lal said, “The ability to increase capacity fast and superior quality of motorcycles is a crucial step for Royal Enfield towards meeting our global ambitions. While we are adding new models and new dealerships in the Indian market which is fuelling our growth, we are also working on building our presence globally. Higher investments into brand and distribution, as well as new products that are very appealing to international markets are going to be key for us to achieve global leadership in the mid-size motorcycle category.”

The construction at the plant commenced in February 2012, and with civil work continuing around the clock it was completed in a record time of 11 months. In addition to increasing capacity, the Oragadam plant has been designed to optimize cost of production through relevant automation while retaining the human craftsmanship that is distinct to the iconic Royal Enfield motorcycles. Towards this, an absolutely path-breaking new CED paint shop with a painting capacity of 600 motorcycles per day has been installed in the plant. Further, to ensure consistency and less wastage, a robotic painting system and powder coating system have also been added. At the same time, processes such as the legendary pin-striping continue to be done through craftsmen who lend that special human touch to each motorcycle.

The vehicle assembly line at Oragadam comes with several features such as ergonomic assembly work stations, torque controlled tools with feedback device and a capacity of producing one motorcycle a minute, or over 800 per day on two shifts. Effective controls and process, right from material handling to review mechanisms, have been created on the backbone of a modern and strong IT infrastructure. In addition, chassis dynamometers and a 1.4 kilometer test track within the factory premises allows for the motorcycles to be thoroughly tested before they are dispatched for customers.

The Oragadam facility has been built with sustainability in mind from the very beginning of the design stage with several initiatives such as reduction of effluent generation at source and zero liquid discharge system of treatment. In addition, conservation of resources such as electricity, water and fuel has been given top priority. Even during the construction stage the green concept was applied, such as using soil from within the site for filling, as well as using the ideal quantities of steel, concrete and cement. The focus was also on creating efficient work spaces, equipment and utilities, and hence effective use of natural, diffused lighting, natural air flow inside plant and 25 percent of wooded area have been ensured.

 1946 Harley-Davidson UL
1946 Harley Davidson UL

A ten year restoration to build a Deluxe UL model using almost entirely OEM parts. Freshly rebuilt motor and transmission. Features NOS factory wiring harness, grips, and two year kick pedal. By 1940 the venerable flathead UL model engine had been thoroughly sorted out by Harley Davidson engineers, making it one of the most reliable models of its time. But taking leads from the new overhead valve Model E and EL, the engineers adapted a dry sump lubrication system and four-speed transmission to the flathead model, reining it even more in the process.

Neale Bayly Rides to Premier June 9

Editor’s Note:
Regular readers of Motorcycle Classics will be familiar with motorcycle journalist Neale Bayly’s regular contributions to the magazine. An accomplished rider and writer with years of experience in the saddle and behind a camera, Neale has ridden in just about every corner of the earth and with some of the most famous and gifted motorcyclists in the world. A few years back Neale teamed up with Dennis Gage of
My Classic Car fame to produce a series for Speed TV called Trippin’ on Two Wheels. For the past few years, Neale has focused his efforts on bringing attention to the plight of orphan children in Peru, working to help the Hogar Belen orphanage outside Moquegua, Peru, rebuild following a devastating earthquake in 2001. The children of Hogar have been living in temporary accommodations ever since. Neale has been trying to fix that. Along the way he was inspired to bring other riders with him to help, and he’s turned their riding and their work at Hogar into a new series for SPEED, Neale Bayly Rides Peru. We hope you’ll watch and that you’ll support Neale’s continuing efforts.

Neale Bayly Rides to Premier June 9

Please help us spread the word by sharing this with your friends and facebook friends so we can get as many people as possible watching the show, as we take our riders to see the kids at Hogar. They faced some serious challenges, from sand storms in the desert to thick, freezing fog at 14,500 feet up in the Andes and long, hard days in the saddle. They all did just fine, and our build team did an amazing job at the orphanage renovating the bakery. And everyone made it home in one piece. Just.

We hope to have the Wellspring Outreach website upgraded by the time we go to air and have our fingers crossed it will produce some serious donations to allow us to build a new home for these kids. We will be clearing the old earthquake-damaged home in the next few months to prepare the site for building, so we hope our time is good here.

For those close enough to Charlotte, NC, Blue Restaurant will host an evening event on May 10th to meet with wine expert Mark Oldman, and there will be a silent auction at the end to raise some money for Wellspring. He will be bringing signed copies of his book, also. Further, we will have a big party Thursday May 30th to kick things off, so please check the facebook page for details and we hope you can attend. We will also have a motorcycle party at BMW of Charlotte June 29th after the series has run the first time, with a live band, etc.

Many thanks in advance for your support.

Moto Guzzi USA Unveils All-New California 1400 Model

Moto Guzzi USA Unveils All-New California 1400 Model: Fusing Innovative Design, Never-Before-Seen Technology and Iconic Heritage

Actor and Guzzi Owner Ewan McGregor is New Face of California 1400’s Global Advertising Campaign

California Custom 2014

New York, NY - April 9 - Moto Guzzi USA, the North American branch of the Piaggio Group’s iconic Moto Guzzi motorcycle brand, known for its high quality craftsmanship, iconic design, rich heritage and originality, today announced the all-new 2014 California 1400 models will arrive to U.S. dealerships the week of April 15th. The storied Italian brand and model line gained prominence in the American market via its exclusive contract with the LAPD and California Highway Patrol, over 40 years ago. Available in two versions, Custom and Touring, the new California 1400 was unveiled in southern California by Stefano Sterpone, Piaggio Group Executive Vice President, head of EMEA and Americas markets and Miguel Martinez, Piaggio Group Americas President & CEO. Throughout the two-day launch experience, Moto Guzzi dealers, invited guests, enthusiasts and tastemakers were able to experience the new models firsthand via an exclusive launch party or private ride throughout the winding canyons of Malibu.

Assembled by hand at Moto Guzzi’s factory in Mandello del Lario, Italy, where its motorcycles have been built since 1921, the all-new 2014 California 1400 represents a turning point in Moto Guzzi history: combining the latest, most advanced technology with the style, craftsmanship, comfort and performance the brand is known for.

Recognized by all, loved by many and revered by long distance riders during its four-decade career, the Moto Guzzi California has patrolled American freeways, escorted esteemed monarchs and presidents and has been parked in the garages of cinema divas and rock stars alike, including actor Ewan McGregor, passionate Guzzi owner and face of the new California 1400 “My Bike, My Pride” global advertising campaign which launched April 5. The relationship between McGregor and Moto Guzzi began in 2007 when McGregor attended GMG (Moto Guzzi World Days) in Mandello del Lario, Italy, on his white vintage California.

Starting April 15, licensed motorcycle riders and enthusiasts can visit their local participating dealer and test ride the new Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom model. By visiting www.motoguzzi-us.com, enthusiasts can complete an online test ride appointment request, locate a participating dealer and receive a personalized product introduction.

History
In 1970, Moto Guzzi won the first motorcycle fleet contract in America ever awarded to a foreign manufacturer and developed the California model for the LAPD and the California Highway Patrol, propelling the Italian brand to success in the U.S. market. The Moto Guzzi California designed for the LAPD was decidedly different from the base model V7 sold in dealerships and featured an oversized saddle, bullhorn handlebars, platform footrests and an abundance of chrome protection. Since then, seven generations and four engine capacities (750cc, 850cc, 1000cc, 1100cc) have alternated in more than 100,000 units manufactured.

The Details Make the Motorcycle
The new California 1400 redefines the concept of the luxury bike, polarizing it into two opposite personalities, and is distinguished by the craftsmanship with which each component is assembled. “Details make the motorcycle,” said Miguel Galluzzi, Head of Piaggio Group’s Advanced Design Center in Pasadena, Calif.

Surprising in the smallest details and in its components, the new California 1400 breaks the mold for motorcycle design and conveys unmistakable brand heritage and tradition from the silk-screened Moto Guzzi logo on the brushed aluminum valve covers of the new 1,400cc V-Twin engine to the spectacular dual LED taillight assembly.

The lines of the California 1400 are instinctive and the flow is natural. Beginning with the poly-ellipsoid headlight with daytime running light illumination (DRL) and moving rearward to the fuel tank smartly showcasing the iconic 90-degree V-Twin engine, the lines finish with the horizontal flow of the chrome exhaust pipes and rear mudguard, molded over the impressive 200mm rear tire.

State-of-the-Art Technology
The 2014 California 1400 is the most technologically-advanced cruiser on the market today and includes these innovative elements:

• The largest twin cylinder engine ever made in Europe - A 1,380cc 90-degree V-Twin engine able to produce an explosive 88.5 foot pounds of torque at just 2,750 rpm

• Traction Control - The first custom in the world equipped with the three-level MGCT traction control

• Tri-Map Ride-by-Wire technology - The first custom in the world equipped with ride-by-wire technology. The rider can change the character of the bike directly from the handlebar. Three different power output curves: Turismo (Touring), Veloce (Sport) and Pioggia (Rain).

• Electronic Cruise Control - With the push of a button on the right hand grip, the rider can set the pace and enjoy mile upon mile of open road;

• LED Daytime Running Lights - The first custom in the world with a headlight assembly like the system used on late model cars;

• The Elastic Engine - An elastic support system fitting the powertrain to the frame. Through a series of rubber dampeners and rockers the engine vibrations are filtered out leaving the rider with a smooth and comfortable ride.

Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring
The touring version is the California in its purest form, created for discerning long distance riders. Luxuriously equipped with a leather two-tone saddle, a “Patrol” windshield, chrome fog lights, 35-liter panniers and chrome crash protection allow for comfort, aerodynamic protection and cargo capacity unrivaled in its class.

Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom
The California 1400 Custom doesn’t spoil the rider with accessories and shiny chrome, but it wins their heart hard and fast: two wheels, an engine, saddle and handlebars. The minimalist design further enhances the presence of technological content which is simply not found on any other competitor.

Pricing and Availability
The MSRP of the 2014 California 1400 Custom ABS is $14,990. Available colors are Basalt Black or Mercury Gray. The MSRP of the 2014 California 1400 Touring ABS is $17,990. Available colors are Ambassador Black or Eldorado White. Both models are available at U.S. Moto Guzzi dealerships starting April 15.

Norton Motorcycles Moves to Donington Hall

Norton Logo

Historic Donington Hall to serve as Norton Motorcycles new world headquarters and manufacturing facilities

Norton Motorcycles (UK) Ltd. announced that it has completed the purchase of historic Donington Hall, which will serve as its new corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities.

Donington Hall

Situated on 26 acres of classic English countryside and located within the Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit race complex, the new head office and production facilities are situated less than a mile from Norton’s current manufacturing plant. The company will first transition its corporate and engineering staff to the new location, and then subsequently prepare for transfer of its manufacturing to the site.

Steeped in British history, the main building Donington Hall was constructed in a Gothic Revival style in 1790. While the original 40,000-square-foot Donington Hall and its grand entry greet with remarkable architectural style, the building’s interior features modern office and meeting facilities. As recently as 2012, the site has served as world headquarters for British Midlands Airways, and benefits from a fresh, complete renovation and modernisation. Located within the same grounds to the rear of Donington Hall is an additional 45,000-square-feet of a newly constructed building complex, known as Hastings House, which will serve as Norton’s production facilities.

“While our current location has served us well as our starting point for Norton, it does not reflect the identity and culture of the Norton brand well.” stated Norton UK Boss Stuart Garner. “Donington Hall brings to mind a unique British style of permanence, strength and quality, attributes that we build into every Norton Motorcycle.” He continued “Style and design alone is not enough however, and beyond the drama of Donington Hall’s main building, the site includes a thoroughly modern facility that will allow us to expand production capabilities, as it is clear that we have quickly outgrown the capacity of our original location.”

As Norton readies itself to increase production and enter new markets worldwide, staying true to its mainstay of quality without compromise and ‘Built in Britain by British hands’ remains a top priority. As such, the company has been bringing more and more manufacturing in-house, and the new location now permits the company to continue to mature and grow within its existing locale.

The Donington Grand Prix Circuit complex, home of the new Norton headquarters, has become one of the world’s major destinations for motorcyclists and motor sports enthusiasts alike. The site is home to 2013 rounds of the World and British Superbike championship, as well as a full calendar of world class motorcar road racing, vintage racing, rock concerts as well as the Grand Prix Collection museum which houses the world’s largest collection of Formula One race cars.

Dan Van Epps of Norton Motorcycles USA added “Where else in the world can one tour an 18th century Gothic Revival mansion, view a Norton Motorcycle being built, watch a World Superbike race and attend an Iron Maiden concert all in the same place? Donington Hall and its setting inspire and ground us firmly to all that is great about Britain and British motor sports both past and present. It reminds us daily of the importance of our mission -- to design and engineer motorcycles that are worthy of this iconic brand and its history of excellence.”

Arai Introduces Aggressive New Defiant Helmet

Arai Helmets

Targeted to riders wanting more style without compromising helmet benefits to get it.

(Allentown, PA) For 2013, Arai introduces a new full-face model named the Defiant. It is scheduled to arrive at Arai dealers in late Spring.

If the Defiant name seems a little out of character for Arai, the helmet itself is as well. Much more aggressive-looking than its siblings, the Defiant helmet still offers Arai’s enviable array of upmarket features and benefits. In fact, Arai touts the new model to “riders who demand more style on the outside, but who refuse to compromise in other places to get it.”

Arai Defiant Helmet

Among the helmet's key features inside are Arai’s patented FCS® (Facial Contour System) cheek pad, a design so advanced the company says it combines unprecedented support and comfort, while further reducing interior noise; 5mm peel-away cheek and temple pads micro-fit the interior to your facial contour; and the fully removable/washable/replaceable comfort liner now features Arai’s water-repellent Dry-Max™ material on the exposed areas of the cheekpads and neckroll that prevents water absorption in wet conditions and provides a “luxurious” feel. The new IR Neckroll pad has an improved shape to flow more air to the bottom of the helmet at lower speeds for improved rider comfort.

Outside, the Defiant’s new IR chinvent and front spoiler edge trim are said to offer more than just a bold look: typical of Arai, they house a number of rider benefits. The chinvent provides multiple adjustments and functions “with tangible rider benefits,” while the edge trim is flared along the bottom, creating a stabilizing down force while reducing buffeting, lifting, and turbulence-generated wind noise. Another visual feature of the new Defiant is its larger IC-4 upper front intake vents whose slide-gate closures seal more completely when closed, allowing for a cleaner airflow. The new Defiant also has Arai’s patented Hyper-Ridge® reinforcing band, and the helmet comes standard with a clear Pinlock SAI Max-Vision faceshield and anti-fog lens insert.

Defiant comes in an expanded size range from XXS to XXXL, in five solid colors and six graphic designs and colors. MSRP ranges from $619.95 to $759.95. Like all individually- handcrafted Arais, it meets or exceeds both Snell 2010 and DOT standards.

For complete information, please see your nearest Arai retailer, or go to www.AraiAmericas.com/defiant

List of unique features and benefits highlight new open-face helmet model’s emphasis on long-distance touring comfort

Arai’s marketing lead-in for its just-introduced CT-Z touring helmet pretty much sums up the new model’s focus: “More miles in more comfort. What more could you ask for.”

Arai CT-Z Touring Helmet

The special edition open-face CT-Z is designed to satisfy long-distance riders: “The objective was a helmet that’s truly all-day comfortable, one that combines this extra level of comfort with light weight, stability, strong ventilation, a peak, and the convenience of a flip-up faceshield. Plus, it has the added benefit of meeting or exceeding the Snell 2010 standard, which modular helmets don’t have at this point.”

The Arai CT-Z borrows the shell shape and function of Arai’s current open-face XC® models, models which the company says redefined open-face helmet design and function by giving riders the added protection of more facial coverage in the jaw area without sacrificing traditional open-face helmet feel. The CT-Z helmet then adds a distinctive peak design that both channels air into the helmet and provides day-long shade.

Highlighting the interior is Arai’s patent-pending FCS cheekpad design that uses an innovative and exclusive spring-support built into the cheekpad that actually cradles and supports the head. The spring-support adds just the right amount of pressure when needed while being worn, but then easily moves out of the way for easier helmet on-off. The design is also said to offer the benefit of an exceptionally quiet ride by muffling more wind noise coming in from below the ears (the main source of helmet noise). FCS also has Arai’s exclusive 5 mm peel-away custom-fit layer, giving the rider even more ability to craft the perfect fit and comfort for his or her individual face. In addition, the comfort liner is fully removable for faster easier cleaning at the end of a hot day.

Ventilation comes via the upper-vent diffuser system from Arai’s top-of-the-line race helmet, the Corsair-V. The advantages of this are greatly-improved airflow and helmet stability. A vented neck roll uses the airflow under the rider’s neck to further enhance ventilation by extracting more interior heat and stale air.

The new CT-Z helmet has Arai’s organic shell shape that  follows the smooth, linear, naturally-reinforcing shape of the egg, “one of nature’s strongest shapes.” Arai says this shape “flows” better in the wind, conforming more to the head’s natural shape—smaller and less bulbous—and seals better to further reduce wind noise. The interior shape is Arai’s Intermediate Oval (IO) interior shape.

It is available in sizes XS-XXXL, in five solid colors, at a suggested retail of $609.95. Because it is a special edition model, the CT-Z won’t be carried by many Arai dealers. Interested riders should check with their local dealer.

BMW Selected as Featured Marque at LeMay Vintage Motorcycle Festival

2013 Vintage Motorcycle Festival at America’s Car Museum Selects BMW Motorrad as Featured Marque Iconic German motorcycle manufacturer marks 90th anniversary in 2013

TACOMA, Wash. (March 4, 2013) – The Vintage Motorcycle Festival at LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM) has named BMW Motorrad as featured marque for the August 24-25, 2013 motorcycle event in Tacoma, Wash. The decision to feature the Munich-based motorcycle manufacturer coincides with the 90th anniversary of BMW Motorrad.

“BMW is a motorcycle company that also builds cars. In fact, they were building motorcycles well before the cars came along,” said Bob Henig, president of Bob’s BMW in Jessup, Md. and a BMW collector who is serving as a judge at this year’s Vintage Motorcycle Festival. “BMWs have always had classic, clean styling which made for low-cost, easy maintenance, so people could really enjoy their motorcycles. The idea was that people should ride them more than they should have to shine them.”

BMW Motorrad’s first motorcycle was the R32, which debuted in September 1923. The R32 was designed by Max Friz, the first chief engineer and design director for BMW AG, and includes many features that are still used on today’s BMW motorcycles.

“That basic design – the horizontally-opposed, air-cooled engine, with a transmission coupled directly to the back of the engine, offset to the right, with a driveshaft to a beveled rear drive, is exactly the layout that you can buy today on a modern BMW,” said Peter Nettesheim, a private collector from Huntington, N.Y., who owns eight R32 bikes, including the oldest surviving one – the 22nd BMW motorcycle ever built, which still runs today.

“When I have the R32 parked on the street, the first thing people want to look at is how the different mechanical systems work: the braking system, the throttle system, and anyone who knows BMW immediately recognizes the same basic layout as today’s bikes,” said Nettesheim, who will also be a judge at the Vintage Motorcycle Festival. “The quality of the fit and finish is something people are always impressed with for a 90-year old piece of equipment. BMW paid a lot of attention 90 years ago to quality, fit and finish, just as they continue to do today.”

Like Nettesheim, Henig’s collection includes an R32. Henig’s is an unrestored 1925 R32, and he also owns a 1929 R57 and a 1943 R75 with a sidecar, among others.

“BMW’s technology has always been at the forefront of the motorcycle industry, and their quality of build is remarkable,” said Henig. “I’m looking forward to coming to the Festival and sharing the knowledge and passion that I have for BMW motorcycles.”

The Vintage Motorcycle Festival is one of the annual signature events at the 165,000 square-foot Tacoma museum. Along with the many BMWs, other motorcycles from famous makers will include Ducati, Triumph, Norton, Harley-Davidson, Indian and European marques from bygone eras.

The festival’s main event on Saturday, Aug. 24 will include judged classes and awards, a swap meet, trials motorcycle demonstrations, panel discussions and music. A scenic motorcycle ride launching from ACM’s plaza and traveling along Pacific Northwest roads is slated for Sunday.

The inaugural event in 2012 attracted more than 200 motorcycles and 2,000 enthusiasts to ACM’s Haub Family Field. Best of Show was a 1963 Norton Atlas owned by Ron Rumbolz of Fife, Wash., which is now on display at the museum.

Record-breaking Vincent Black Shadow at Bonhams Stafford Sale

Fully-restored ex-works machine is estimated to realise between £110,000 and £130,000 at the Bonhams auction at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford, UK, on Sunday 28th April.

Record-breaking Vincent Black Shadow at Bonhams Stafford Sale

A Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle that formed part of a bid by the factory to set a new 24-hour speed record in 1952 is among £1 million worth of lots already consigned for the annual Bonhams sale at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford, UK, on Sunday 28th April.

Although mechanical failures prevented the bid at Montlhéry in France in May 1952 from being successful, the British team returned home with eight new records, including six hours at over 100mph.

The fully-restored, matching-numbers machine has been owned by the current vendor for more than 40 years and is offered with a pre-sale estimate of £110,000 to £130,000 ($167,000 - $198,000).

Among other machines consigned to the Bonhams sale of Pioneer, Vintage and Collectors’ Motorcycles and Related Memorabilia are a trio of Brough motorcycles – two from a single owner collection.

A 1931 SS80 that started life as a sidecar outfit with Ipswich Police before being converted to solo trim and raffled off to raise money for the Brough Superior Club is estimated at upwards of £50,000. Tickets for the 1972 raffle were sold for five pence each, or 50 pence for a book of 10, and second and third prizes were 10 and five gallons of oil respectively. The lucky winner sold the machine to a club member who raced it for several years, before it passed to its current owner in 2004.

A 1926 SS80/100 model estimated to realise between £160,000 and £200,000 is a rare factory variant combining an SS100 frame with the SS80 sidevalve engine. Only a handful of these unusual machines were made, of which very few survive. Re-engined post-World War II with an overhead-valve SS100 unit, it won the ‘Rebuild of the Year’ award at the Brough Superior Club’s Annual Rally in 2012.

The Brough family is also represented by the 1921 Brough Model G. This rare motorcycle was manufactured by George Brough’s father William, whose company was in existence from 1902 to 1925. Offered for restoration, it is estimated to realise between £20,000 and £30,000.

Other British motorcycles of note include a rare factory-restored 1957 Ariel Square Four 4G Mk2 (estimate £12,000 - £14,000). Britain’s major motorcycle manufacturers did not routinely offer a restoration service to their customers, preferring to delegate such tasks to local agents. This machine’s late owner John Hay, deputy news editor of The Financial Times, bought it in 1962 and succeeded in persuading the factory to restore it for him, despite the fact that the ‘Squariel’ had been out of production for three years. The machine remained with him until his death, passing to the current owner in 2011.

The sale will also feature the earliest known Velocette Viper – a 1955 model that originally formed part of the factory’s press fleet – (estimate £8,000-12,000), a restored 1949 Vincent Rapide – one of an estimated 107 touring models shipped to the US finished in ‘Chinese Red’ – (estimate £50,000 - £70,000), a 1988 Norton Classic rotary – number ‘51’ of the 100 built – that has covered only 1,500 miles from new (estimate £8,000 - £10,000), and a 1961 BSA DBD34 Gold Star Scrambler with only 11 miles recorded since restoration (estimate £9,000 - £11,000).

Collectable foreign classics on offer include a 1972 Laverda 750SFC production racer (estimate £30,000 - £34,000), a circa 1979 Yamaha TZ750 Formula 750 racing motorcycle (estimate £30,000 - £34,000), a 1982 Yamaha TZ500J Grand Prix racing motorcycle (estimate £32,000 - £36,000), and the unique 2001 MV Agusta 952cc F4 factory prototype that competed in that year’s World Endurance Championship (estimate £20,000 - £26,000).

No Bonhams spring Stafford sale would be complete without a fine selection of early motorcycles, and the sale this year will feature a 1914 Excelsior Model 7C v-twin (estimate £35,000 - £45,000), a 1913 Rex v-twin (estimate £18,000 - £22,000), a 1905 Peugeot v-twin (estimate £18,000 - £22,000), and 1924 Rudge 4-valve/4-speed model (estimate £6,000 - £8,000).

Ben Walker, Head of the Bonhams Motorcycle Department, said: “We are very much looking forward to the first UK sale of the year at the International Classic MotorCycle Show. It has been an excellent start to 2013 for the department, which recorded its most successful sale in Las Vegas in January and more than doubled its previous sale total in Paris earlier this month.

“We hope to continue this run of success at the first of our two annual sales in Stafford. We are delighted to be able to offer such a wide and eclectic range of important motorcycles at what has traditionally been a very successful sale.”

Consignments for the auction are still being accepted. Call +44 (0) 20 8963 2817 or email motorcycles@bonhams.com

About Ace Cafe London: The original Ace Cafe was opened in 1938 as a “transport cafe” on the north edge of London.  In the Fifties and Sixties, the Ace arguably became the birthplace of the cafe racer culture and the mods and rockers era as British youth discovered rock n’ roll music on the juke boxes and they raced their bikes from cafe to cafe. Time passed, as did the glory days of the British Motorcycle Industry and the rock n’ roll scene, but the dream lived on and in 1994, Mark Wilsmore, driven by his passion, staged an event to mark the Ace Cafe’s closure in 1969. 12,000 people attended this first Ace Cafe Reunion, which has since been held every year, attracting over 150,000 visitors. It was Mark’s vision that brought the iconic cafe, back from dereliction, to the point where today it is the world’s most famous and charismatic destination and pitstop for the global “petrolhead” community. About Dime City Cycles: Dime City Cycles is one of the premier global suppliers of vintage motorcycle and cafe racer parts. ARAI HELMETS DOMINATE AMA PRO ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS AGAIN – AND THE SEASON’S NOT OVER!
Arai claims four of the top five positions in both Superbike and Daytona SportBike and eight of the top ten in XR1200

(Allentown, PA, October 2, 2012) There’s dominance, and then there’s dominance. Once again, Arai helmets have dominated the AMA Pro Road Racing championship — and it’s not over yet, with one round remaining this weekend in New Orleans.

At the Homestead round, Arai’s Josh Hayes and his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha R1 clinched his third straight AMA National Guard Superbike championship in a row. (Congratulations, Josh!) And no matter what happens at the final round, Arai motorcycle helmet-wearing riders will claim four of the top five championships positions with Hayes, Yoshimura Suzuki’s Blake Young, National Guard/Jordan Motorsports’ Roger Lee Hayden (who won his first AMA Superbike race at Homestead!) and Team Hero’s Geoff May.

Same thing over in the Daytona SportBike championship, with Arai racers again claiming four of the top five championship spots. GEICO Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas won his second Daytona Sportbike championship, with M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby, Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha’s Tommy Hayden, and Latus Motors Racing Triumph’s Jason DiSalvo also in the top five.

The H-D XR1200 class is still up for grabs coming into this weekend’s final round in New Orleans. But with Arai racers holding an astounding eight of the top ten championship spots, it looks pretty good for Michael Barnes, Tyler O’Hara, Michael Corbino, or Kyle Wyman, with Travis Wyman, David Estok, Josh Chisum and Darren James winding up the Arai motorcycle helmet top eight.

Over in the Supersport class, Latus Motors Racing Triumph’s Arai’s Dustin Dominguez has already won the Supersport East championship. The overall championship, combining the East and West series, will also be determined this weekend.

All in all, if there was ever a doubt about which motorcycle helmet more top AMA road racers choose, that answer seems pretty clear: Arai helmets.
