Record-Breaking Vincent Black Shadow

Record-Breaking Vincent Black Shadow Motorcycle Tops the Bill at Bonhams Auction

The Bonhams auction at the International Classic MotorCycle Show at the Staffordshire County Showground topped £1.4 million on Sunday 28th April, with the top-selling lot a 1952 Vincent Black Shadow, which realised £113,500.

The fully-restored, ex-works Vincent Black Shadow formed part of the factory’s bid to set a new 24-hour speed record at Montlhéry in France in May 1952. Although mechanical failures prevented the bid from being successful, the British team returned home with eight new records, including six hours at over 100mph.

Among other auction highlights was a 1931 Brough Superior SS80 motorcycle won in a raffle more than 40 years ago and a 1914 Indian Model F once owned by legendary Hollywood actor Steve McQueen.

The latter sold to a European telephone bidder for £32,200, while the SS80 realised £57,500 – more than a million times the cost of the 1972 raffle ticket. Starting life as a sidecar outfit with Ipswich Police, the motorcycle was converted to solo trim and later offered as first prize in a fund-raising raffle at the Brough Superior Club. Tickets were sold for five pence each, or 50 pence for a book of 10, and second and third prizes respectively were 10 and five gallons of oil.

An eclectic selection of 30 machines owned by the late Clifford Jones proved popular with bidders, selling for a total of more than £175,000. The collection featured a number of 1950s cafe racers, as well as much modern-day racing and superbike machinery.

Meanwhile in the automobilia section, two Akai Yamaha race helmets worn by the legendary Barry Sheene in the 1980s fetched a combined total of £10,000, selling for £6,875 (Lot 105) and £3,125 (Lot 104) respectively.

Ben Walker, Head of the Bonhams Motorcycle Department, said: “Once again our auction at the ‘International’ Classic proved to be exactly that, with interest from bidders from across the globe.

“Record-breaking machines like the 1952 Vincent Black Shadow and the movie star charisma of Steve McQueen were among the draws for the crowd, and there was fierce competition for the Ducatis in the collection of the late Clifford Jones.”

 1946 Harley-Davidson UL
1946 Harley Davidson UL

A ten year restoration to build a Deluxe UL model using almost entirely OEM parts. Freshly rebuilt motor and transmission. Features NOS factory wiring harness, grips, and two year kick pedal. By 1940 the venerable flathead UL model engine had been thoroughly sorted out by Harley Davidson engineers, making it one of the most reliable models of its time. But taking leads from the new overhead valve Model E and EL, the engineers adapted a dry sump lubrication system and four-speed transmission to the flathead model, reining it even more in the process.

1949 Indian Sport Scout
1949 Indian Sport Scout

This 1949 Indian Sport Scout is probably the best available. 3,500 original miles. Every option available was installed. Starts and runs great. Rare original factory yellow paint. Previously owned by Chapman S. Root Auto Museum of Coca-Cola bottling fame, Daytona, Florida. On November 1, 1945, duPont formally turned the operations of Indian over to Ralph B. Rogers of the UK. In 1950-51 under Rogers’ control, Indian discontinued the Scout and began to manufacture lightweight 149 Arrow and 250 Scout models. These bikes suffered from poor quality and a lack of development. Manufacture of all products was halted in 1953.

Record-breaking Vincent Black Shadow at Bonhams Stafford Sale

Fully-restored ex-works machine is estimated to realise between £110,000 and £130,000 at the Bonhams auction at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford, UK, on Sunday 28th April.

Record-breaking Vincent Black Shadow at Bonhams Stafford Sale

A Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle that formed part of a bid by the factory to set a new 24-hour speed record in 1952 is among £1 million worth of lots already consigned for the annual Bonhams sale at the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Stafford, UK, on Sunday 28th April.

Although mechanical failures prevented the bid at Montlhéry in France in May 1952 from being successful, the British team returned home with eight new records, including six hours at over 100mph.

The fully-restored, matching-numbers machine has been owned by the current vendor for more than 40 years and is offered with a pre-sale estimate of £110,000 to £130,000 ($167,000 - $198,000).

Among other machines consigned to the Bonhams sale of Pioneer, Vintage and Collectors’ Motorcycles and Related Memorabilia are a trio of Brough motorcycles – two from a single owner collection.

A 1931 SS80 that started life as a sidecar outfit with Ipswich Police before being converted to solo trim and raffled off to raise money for the Brough Superior Club is estimated at upwards of £50,000. Tickets for the 1972 raffle were sold for five pence each, or 50 pence for a book of 10, and second and third prizes were 10 and five gallons of oil respectively. The lucky winner sold the machine to a club member who raced it for several years, before it passed to its current owner in 2004.

A 1926 SS80/100 model estimated to realise between £160,000 and £200,000 is a rare factory variant combining an SS100 frame with the SS80 sidevalve engine. Only a handful of these unusual machines were made, of which very few survive. Re-engined post-World War II with an overhead-valve SS100 unit, it won the ‘Rebuild of the Year’ award at the Brough Superior Club’s Annual Rally in 2012.

The Brough family is also represented by the 1921 Brough Model G. This rare motorcycle was manufactured by George Brough’s father William, whose company was in existence from 1902 to 1925. Offered for restoration, it is estimated to realise between £20,000 and £30,000.

Other British motorcycles of note include a rare factory-restored 1957 Ariel Square Four 4G Mk2 (estimate £12,000 - £14,000). Britain’s major motorcycle manufacturers did not routinely offer a restoration service to their customers, preferring to delegate such tasks to local agents. This machine’s late owner John Hay, deputy news editor of The Financial Times, bought it in 1962 and succeeded in persuading the factory to restore it for him, despite the fact that the ‘Squariel’ had been out of production for three years. The machine remained with him until his death, passing to the current owner in 2011.

The sale will also feature the earliest known Velocette Viper – a 1955 model that originally formed part of the factory’s press fleet – (estimate £8,000-12,000), a restored 1949 Vincent Rapide – one of an estimated 107 touring models shipped to the US finished in ‘Chinese Red’ – (estimate £50,000 - £70,000), a 1988 Norton Classic rotary – number ‘51’ of the 100 built – that has covered only 1,500 miles from new (estimate £8,000 - £10,000), and a 1961 BSA DBD34 Gold Star Scrambler with only 11 miles recorded since restoration (estimate £9,000 - £11,000).

Collectable foreign classics on offer include a 1972 Laverda 750SFC production racer (estimate £30,000 - £34,000), a circa 1979 Yamaha TZ750 Formula 750 racing motorcycle (estimate £30,000 - £34,000), a 1982 Yamaha TZ500J Grand Prix racing motorcycle (estimate £32,000 - £36,000), and the unique 2001 MV Agusta 952cc F4 factory prototype that competed in that year’s World Endurance Championship (estimate £20,000 - £26,000).

No Bonhams spring Stafford sale would be complete without a fine selection of early motorcycles, and the sale this year will feature a 1914 Excelsior Model 7C v-twin (estimate £35,000 - £45,000), a 1913 Rex v-twin (estimate £18,000 - £22,000), a 1905 Peugeot v-twin (estimate £18,000 - £22,000), and 1924 Rudge 4-valve/4-speed model (estimate £6,000 - £8,000).

Ben Walker, Head of the Bonhams Motorcycle Department, said: “We are very much looking forward to the first UK sale of the year at the International Classic MotorCycle Show. It has been an excellent start to 2013 for the department, which recorded its most successful sale in Las Vegas in January and more than doubled its previous sale total in Paris earlier this month.

“We hope to continue this run of success at the first of our two annual sales in Stafford. We are delighted to be able to offer such a wide and eclectic range of important motorcycles at what has traditionally been a very successful sale.”

Consignments for the auction are still being accepted. Call +44 (0) 20 8963 2817 or email motorcycles@bonhams.com

Bonhams to Offer the Incredibly Rare 1905 Leo Motorcycle at Vegas Auction

The exciting discovery in New England brings to light an obscure California-made motorcycle once thought ‘extinct’

1905 Leo Motorcycle

San Francisco – Following the recent news of Bonhams’ consignment of the remarkably original 1902 Rambler Model B from the Indian Motorcycle Museum, Bonhams is pleased to once again announce another headlining addition to their third annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction.

Thought to be the sole surviving example of a marque lost to time is a recently discovered, complete and original, 1905 Leo Two-Cycle made by the L.A. Mitchell Motor Company of Oakland, California.

This machine is historically significant for several reasons beyond its extreme rarity. Vehicles of California manufacture are exceedingly uncommon; the Leo motorcycle is thought to have been produced for just one year, 1905, and this now represents perhaps the earliest surviving example of an American two-cycle motorcycle.

Unlike many manufacturers of the day, the Leo was a purpose-built motorcycle utilising a motorcycle – not bicycle – frame. Its lightweight, compact motor demonstrates the brand’s progressive vision as two-cycle engines were not commonly used in American motorcycles until after World War I. Nor was this machine simply a prototype, as close examination shows evidence of many miles of use, suggesting an explicit, well-sorted product.

Discovered in the warehouse of a New England museum where it sat hidden and forgotten for decades, the 107 year-old Leo motorcycle is in extraordinary condition, offering a freely-turning motor, strong compression and original components, such as spokes and rims, Thor pedals and Troxel leather saddle.

On Thursday 10th January at Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, this singular Leo will join other highly newsworthy motorcycles – such as the rare 1939 BMW Rennsport Kompressor and Steve McQueen’s 1970 Husqvarna 400 Cross – at Bonhams’ third annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction. With its strong history of finding rare machines and achieving excellent results for pioneer and California-made motorcycles, Bonhams’ event is not to be missed.

MidAmerica Rocks Vegas Motorcycle Auction 2013

MidAmerica rocks Vegas with Motorcycle Auction, Races and Celebrities:
Extravaganza features Steve McQueen’s widow and platinum artist Shane Evans

MidAmerica Rocks Vegas Motorcycle Auction 2013

ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 4th – The wheels are in motion and the music is cued up for MidAmerica Auctions’ 22nd Annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction and Races on Jan. 10-12, 2013, at the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

More than 600 antique and classic motorcycles will be up for auction. Kicking off the event, Shane Evans, former drummer of the platinum selling rock group Collective Soul, will serve as the musical guest at the Jan. 10 Children’s Hospital Benefit Dinner Auction featuring 75 premium motorcycles. Evans will sign CDs, photos and memorabilia as well as greet fans throughout the weekend. As a co-founding member of Collective Soul, Evans drummed on seven No. 1 radio hits (“Shine”, “The World I Know”, “Heavy”), 19 Top 40 singles, and sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. It will be his first public appearance in seven years.

“I’m looking forward to playing music again for a cool crowd in a fun city,” said Evans from his Georgia residence. “I hope to visit with a lot of fans and let them know how much I have appreciated their support over the years.”

MidAmerica Auctions will be featuring several exciting private motorcycle collections available for auction, including three motorcycles owned by legendary actor and biking enthusiast, Steve McQueen. Serving as guest of honor is his wife, Barbara McQueen, who will share memories of her famous husband and sign copies of her 2012 book, “Steve McQueen: The Last Mile...Revisited.” Joining her will be McQueen biographer Marshall Terrill, who’ll also sign copies of his two books on ‘The King of Cool.’

“Steve loved collecting antique motorcycles and these were the types of bikes that were in our garage and hangar,” said Barbara McQueen. “He loved kicking back with a couple of brews with like-minded people, trying to talk somebody out of a bike or part. I find it humorous and a tad ironic that I am doing the same thing almost three decades later.”

The life and career of Steve McQueen is a classic example of the American dream made real: of a small town boy from a broken home triumphing over adversity to become one of the richest and most sought-after superstars in the world. McQueen lived every day as if it were his last, and by doing so he lived an extraordinary life, both on screen and off.

On display and for sale will be McQueen's 1941 Indian 741 military Scout, which comes with a 1976 photo of McQueen with the bike on the set of his movie “An Enemy Of The People” as well as a signed check with the power of attorney. Since then the rare bike has been featured in military parades, museum displays and mock warfare. A video of the motorcycle can be viewed here. Two other Steve McQueen motorcycles – a 1938 Triumph Speed Twin and a 1940 Indian Four Cylinder – are also on the auction block.

MidAmerica Rocks Vegas Motorcycle Auction 2013

MidAmerica Auctions is also proud to announce the offering of the world renowned MV Agusta Collection. Formerly offered as a single lot, motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors will have the rare opportunity to obtain a piece of treasure from this prized collection as it will be offered as seventy-one individual lots. Other rare bikes that will be auctioned include: 1925 N.U.T. V-twin; 1936 Harley Davidson VLH-CHP; 1949 Vincent Rapide Custom; 1953 MV Augusta 125 Bialero Grand Prix; 1961 Cotton Continental; 1963 BSA Rocket Gold Star Spitfire Scrambler and a 1975 MV Augusta 750S.
