Happy Birthday Moto Guzzi! 90 years and still going strong!

Moto Guzzi, the famed Italian marque best known in our crowd for its V-twin touring bikes, the Eldorado and Ambassador, and the ground-breaking 1976 LeMans factory café racer, turned 90 on March 15.Of course the most significant Moto Guzzi was the very first one. The “G.P.” prototype (which stood for Guzzi and Parodi) appeared in 1920. Designed by Carlo Guzzi and funded by the Giorgio Parodi family, it featured a 500cc horizontal, single-cylinder engine, along with unit construction gearbox and exposed “bacon-slicer’ flywheel, now a hallmark of early Guzzis.

Moto Guzzi shows off new retro bikes

Although Ducati appears to have quietly put its retro SportClassic line in mothballs, rival Moto Guzzi is keeping the old-school-is-cool theme alive, recently showing off two new models said to be slated for 2012. The bikes, a scrambler version of the well-received V7 Classic and an all new 1,400cc touring bike, were shown at parent company Piaggio Group’s international dealer meeting in Monte Carlo January 27 and 28.

Riding a Friduss Racing Moto Guzzi Lemans Superbike

It’s not often that a race bike gets me second guessing my meager riding skills and questioning if I am man enough to get on it from 30 ft away across the paddock. That was my exact thought process however as owner Stan Friduss pulled away the remote starter and the heavily breathed on 1000cc engine of the 1976 Moto Guzzi Lemans Superbike exploded to life. Every head within earshot turned towards the pit. I approached cautiously as the biked settled into a spitting idle as if it was pissed off for being woken up, courtesy of the gaping DelOrto smoothbore carbs. This was my first introduction to my dance partner for the weekend, and the fortuitous relationship to come.
