BSA

England: Founded 1903, first all-BSA produced in 1910, a 499cc side-valve single. BSA’s 350cc and 500cc single-cylinder Gold Star was a favorite on the track in the 1950s and 1960s. Closed in 1972.

Introduced in 1968, the BSA Rocket 3 just barely beat Honda's CB750 Four to market, making it the first mass produced multi. If it had been pushed into developement when it was first proposed to management in 1964, it might have changed BSA's fortunes.

Dual-sport bikes are hardly new. By some accounts, BSA launched the category in 1965 with its offroad-styled 500cc A50 Wasp and 650cc A65 Hornet. Three years later, the company introduced the Firebird Scrambler, its latest — and arguably best — variation on the theme. Trouble is, they forgot to market it, and the Firebird stalled.
