BMW

German: Founded 1917, first motorcycle, the R32, in 1923. Opposed twins were a mainstay until the 4-cylinder K100, introduced in 1982. 1973 R90S and 1976 R100RS are popular high-performance machines.

As the first truly sporting BMW it was a milestone model for a company generally known for sedate touring machines. Produced through 1976, it remains one of the most collectible BMWs of all time.

When BMW introduced the radical sport-touring 4-cylinder K1 in 1988, the Bavarian firm was already under attack from BMW traditionalists who felt the company was suffering an identity crisis, turning away from a time-honored line of horizontally opposed, air-cooled touring twins in favor of increasingly, well, un-BMW-like machines.
