Written by Barbara McQueen with Marshall Terrill, Steve McQueen: The Last Mile is a long-overdue, brilliantly constructed glimpse into the life and mind of the film and motorsports icon in his final years. Printed on high quality photo paper, this thick hardcover documents Barbara’s three-and-a-half year relationship with McQueen, including candid shots from 1977 to 1980, his year’s out of the spotlight. It chronicles Barbara's early history and modeling career; her years with McQueen at Trancas Beach and Santa Paula as well as behind-the-scene photos on the sets of Tom Horn and The Hunter. The book is written in passage form, weaving Barbara McQueen's personal history, her relationship with her famous husband and the stories behind the hundreds of candid pictures she took — including several of his revered collection of vintage motorcycles, cars and airplanes. It also includes a special foreword by Pat Johnson, McQueen's close friend and karate instructor.
When released in November, 2006, there were 2,000 limited edition copies signed by authors Barbara McQueen and Marshall Terrill. The limited edition includes a slip cover for the book and a CD featuring audio of McQueen going over his script notes as he prepared to film Tom Horn. The CD is a unique insight into how McQueen prepared for a role and how he thought in cinematic terms. Aside from hearing the raw, natural commentary from McQueen off camera, the listener discovers how many of his ideas made it to the screen that weren't in the original screenplay. His instinct for what worked on film was incredible and usually right on. The 45-minute compact disc is just one of several hours of conversations McQueen taped in preparation for the 1980 Western.
A small quantity of the limited edition set — including book, slip cover and CD — are still available through Motorcycle Classics. Order today before they’re gone!
