1961 Triton

A Triton is a Triumph power unit installed in a Norton Featherbed frame, a combination of the best engine in the best frame at the time. No two Tritons are alike but an expression of the special builder's art. This example was built by Jerry Cartwright in a small village in North Wales, U.K. The Triton was the most popular sport bike favored by the Rockers in the 1960s.

Doug, well done, you’re very observant. I can’t remember now what I put on this particular bike. I used magnetos on a few early bikes but soon moved on to electronic ignition. I like a bike to go, not sit there thinking about it. Some buyers wanted a magneto so I gave them a dummy(empty) mag with a Hall Effect transducer inside driving electronic ignition hidden under seat hump. Two 6v coils in series using lazy spark system hidden under tank. As to the tacho drive off the magneto, well the timing cover you refer to with the drive off the exhaust cam á la T120 is rare as rocking horse shit, very expensive and it’s proper place is on a Bonnie engine. If the customer wanted one I’d do it but he’d have to wait for me to find one and pay for it. It was cheaper for me to fit Morgo 750 barrels but sell at a premium, ditto 10 stud heads. It’s a win win for both of us. Same for top fork yikes. All aluminium cheaper for me client pays a premium. Sourcing original yokes difficult and require removal of handlebar clamps. Painting to the standard of the rest of the bike involves hours of work. You may not know but with the exception of sand blasting the frame I did everything on that bike. Nothing outsourced. Everything with no assistants. Remember, it’s a Triton, the client and I make the rules. I think you’re right though, it is pretty and it is a Triton and it’s also in the best motorcycle museum there is. It’s nice to know that it gets a run now and again. Its an interesting build certainly, shame the pictures only show one side of the machine, would be very interesting to see the primary side. But the specs dont match the bike, If it has a Maggie for ignition why is there a modern Harley style coil up under the tank and in front of the exh rockerbox??? Looks like plug wires coming off it to me. Why is the tach drive a bolt on instead of using the stock casting cover w/tach off the exh cam? Plus its driven off whatever is in the maggie position. Got a later model 9 or 10 bolt top end too,, Interesting machine but the writers leave us hanging here. I think we can all agree though it is pretty and IS a Triton.
