Yamaha’s SR500 was a retro bike before being retro was popular. A throwback to the days of BSA Gold Stars and other big street singles, the SR showed a whole new generation how great a big single can be both for running around town and snaking down tight backroads.
This 1978 SR500, though not perfect, appears to be a good rideable example. The tank decals appear to be non-stock, and some markings in the tank are visible in a few of the photos from gas overflow, but aside from this and a few other minor cosmetic flaws, the bike looks good. Buy it and ride it as is, or repaint it and slowly detail it back to perfection. Either way, our guess is once you’ve run it up and down your favorite back road a few times, listening to the thump of that great engine through the bike’s aftermarket Supertrapp exhaust, you’ll be glad you picked it up.
