Although most people in the mid-1980s thought vintage bikes were just old junk, there were a few enthusiasts who not only liked old bikes, but also liked racing them. Two-time AMA Grand National Champion Dick Mann was one of these enthusiasts.

Despite his quiet and reserved demeanor, Mann has a lot of friends, and a lot of them showed up and brought their own friends when he decided to throw a vintage motocross event at Sand Hill Ranch, east of San Francisco Bay.

Featuring an exhibition flat track race and a hill climb demonstration, events like this showed there was an audience for vintage racing, and sparked the present day vintage racing circuit. Dick currently serves on the board of trustees for the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association.
