Going to Vintage Motorcycle Days (VMD) in Lexington, Ohio? Head to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio, early and catch the opening of “Malcolm!,” a new exhibit honoring the legendary career of offroad racing champion and movie star Malcolm Smith.
The museum inducted Smith in 1998, and he’ll return to help dedicate “Malcolm!” on Thursday evening, July 26, 2007, at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public.
One of the most talented riders ever to take to the dirt, Smith’s racing career included six Baja 1000 victories, four Baja 500 wins, eight gold medals at the International Six-Day Trials (ISDT) and a collection of four-wheel victories. But it was his co-starring role in the 1971 cult film On Any Sunday that garnered him the most recognition. Produced by Bruce Brown and Steve McQueen, the movie helped launch America’s love affair with dirt biking — and introduced Malcolm to scores of new fans.
Ever active and passionate about motorcycling, Smith works as an industry ambassador and is a successful multi-line motorcycle dealer. Colleagues such as fellow On Any Sunday star and Motorcycle Hall of Famer Mert Lawwill will join Smith at the official ribbon cutting and opening reception.
Scheduled to precede the July 27-29 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, “Malcolm!” is the perfect beginning to a weekend of world-class motorcycle heritage and history. If you haven’t been to VMD before, you’ve been missing out on the biggest celebration of vintage motorcycles in the U.S.
VMD features three bike shows, the annual Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum Auction, North America’s largest motorcycle swap meet and demo rides on new bikes. Stunt shows take over the acreage surrounding the track. You’ll also enjoy a full slate of racing from the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA), including road racing, motocross, flat-track and trials.
The bike shows are sponsored by Motorcycle Classics, including our Ride ‘Em, Don’t Hide ‘Em Rolling Concours – a fabulous organized ride and bike show covering over 40 miles of twisty back roads in central Ohio. Head to our website at www.MotorcycleClassics.com for more details and registration information. And while you’re there, don’t forget to register for our upcoming Motorcycle Classics Concours d’Elegance and Rolling Concours Ride and Show at the Bonneville Vintage GP, Sept. 7-9, 2007, at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah.
This year, VMD will put the spotlight on some of the greatest icons of Harley-Davidson, both living and mechanical. On the 50th anniversary of its introduction, the Harley-Davidson Sportster and related models are the VMD Marque of the Year, and to continue the orange-and-black theme, two living legends in the Harley-Davidson world, Willie G. Davidson and Jay Springsteen, have been named Grand Marshals.
