Motorcycles of Germany were featured at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This was the fourth Pebble event to include motorcycles, inspiring the attendance of an exceptional group of rare vintage Teutonic machinery, including bikes like Dale Keesecker’s 1968 Clymer-Munch Mammoth.

The very first of an estimated 10 to 20 built by Friedl Munch in collaboration with Floyd Clymer (Clymer was the U.S. distributor for Munch and supplied significant financial assistance to the operation) and fresh from a complete restoration dubbed “100 percent perfect” by Munch expert Michael Kron, Keesecker’s Clymer-Munch took third place, giving some idea of the level of competition at Pebble Beach. First place went to BMW Group Classic’s 1934 BMW R7, while second place went to well-known BMW collector Jeffrey Dean for his 1954 BMW R68 (ridden to the podium by restorer Tim Stafford, behind Keesecker in the photo in the Image Gallery). Motorcycle collector and BMW dealer John Landstrom showed his 1953 Adler M250, and was the only motorcyclist to ride in the annual 70-mile Tour d’Elegance. “I felt a little self-conscious lined up with 150 of the most beautiful and historic cars ever produced,” Landstrom says. “Some of my fellow ‘tourists’ had hood ornaments that cost more than my motorcycle.” Next year’s theme hasn’t been chosen, but the event runs Aug. 14-18, 2013, with the concours on the last day.
