The lightweight 2-stroke Harleys were produced from 1948 to 1966. The design was a copy of the DKW RT125, acquired at the end of World War II from the occupied German manufacturer. It was hoped that the introduction of lightweight motorcycles like the 165 would bring younger buyers into Harley-Davidson dealerships, with the idea that they would move up to one of the full-size models at a later date. The ST 165 was priced at $445 (about $3,618 in 2012).
